The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 is the third variant of the MD-80 family. It is very similar to the MD-81 & MD-82 in terms of size and capacity but it has some additional design & operational improvements including more powerful engines. The MD-83 typically flew medium to long range routes with moderate demand. Like the MD-81 & MD-82, most MD-83 aircraft have either been converted into freighters or have been retired & replaced with more fuel efficient and/or higher capacity aircraft.
